On December 17, 2021, Dr. Michael Jordan, the University Infection Control Health Director, announced that Tufts will require COVID-19 booster shots for everyone returning to campus for the Spring 2022 semester. The booster shot requirement must be met by February 15, 2022. The announcement is reproduced below:
December 17, 2021
Dear Tufts community members,
As you know, Tufts has required all community members to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. We are now updating this policy to require a COVID-19 booster for all eligible students, faculty, and staff per CDC guidance. You are eligible if you completed a 2-dose vaccine series (e.g., Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, etc.) six or more months ago or received a Johnson & Johnson/Janssen single-dose vaccine two or more months ago.
Deadline for Compliance
There is a rolling deadline for complying with this new requirement. All individuals who are eligible to receive a booster on or before January 15, 2022 must comply by February 15, 2022. Individuals who are eligible after January 15, 2022 will have 30 days from their date of eligibility to comply with this policy.
The university selected February 15, 2022 as the compliance deadline for this policy to balance individuals’ need for time to receive their booster shots alongside the community’s urgent interests in protecting public health and ensuring that as many people as possible receive a booster ahead of the new wave of infection. For more information, please see the updated COVID-19 vaccination policies. The university reserves the right to amend these policies, including as needed based on data, public health guidance, and in compliance with applicable law.
How to Get Your Booster Shot
Plan ahead and schedule your booster appointment so that you receive your shot as soon as possible, and ideally before the start of the spring semester in January, if you are eligible. Vaccine is available at local pharmacies and other vaccination locations in the community. If you are currently eligible or will be soon, do not delay scheduling your booster.
Tufts University plans to schedule additional on-campus booster clinics after the winter break, pending vaccine availability; however, we encourage you to receive your booster at a local clinic or pharmacy if one is available to you. You will find the list of scheduled Tufts clinic dates and locations here: https://coronavirus.tufts.edu/healthy-at-tufts/covid-19-vaccinations-tufts. Please check the site often, as new clinics may be added.
Proof of Vaccination
After you receive your booster, please upload or send your updated documentation to:
Medical and religious accommodations will be granted under the law. Individuals who have already received an accommodation for their primary vaccination series are considered accommodated for the booster requirement but are obliged to inform the Office of Equal Opportunity or Tufts Occupational Health Services, if their beliefs or medical conditions have changed.
Individuals seeking medical accommodation should write to: email@example.com. Medical accommodations are granted for contraindications as defined by the US-CDC. Individuals seeking religious accommodation may write to OEO@tufts.edu.
Thank you for your continued efforts to keep our community safe and for your adherence to our expanded vaccination policy. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable winter break, and I look forward to seeing you in January.
With best wishes,
Michael R. Jordan, M.D., M.P.H.
