On August 25, 2026 the State Department announced a pause in immigrant visa applications worldwide.  The stated reason for this pause is to accommodate training for Consular Officers to screen out those who may become a “public charge.”  This pause impacts individuals who are outside of the United States and seeking to enter the United States as an immigrant without a previously approved “Green Card.”  Individuals in F, J, TN, E-3 and H-1B are considered non-immigrants and therefore not subject to this pause.  Individuals who have already been granted Lawful Permanent Residency and hold a Green Card are also not impacted by this pause.
