On August 24, 2026, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the federal agency that oversees the F-1 student visa program, issued new guidance that significantly narrows how schools may interpret and apply CPT regulations. As a result, effective immediately, the International Center will indefinitely pause CPT for optional experiences that are not required of all students in an academic program, including:

-Internships taken for elective academic credit;

-Optional cooperative education (co-op) experiences; or

-Other practical training opportunities that are not a required element of your degree program and required of all students within that program.

We encourage students with questions about this change to reach out to their I-Center Advisor and to utilize other campus resources for support as needed. We also encourage students needing support navigating pending or accepted job offers to consult with their school’s respective career services team.
