5/26/2020 – Suspension of Entry of Persons Arriving from Brazil Due to COVID-19
Tuesday, May, 26th, 2020 COVID-19 Immigration News and Updates
May 26, 2020
Dear International Students and Scholars from Brazil:
On May 24, 2020, the White House issued a Presidential Proclamation announcing that due to the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the US will temporarily suspend the entry of foreign national individuals who were physically present in Brazil in the 14 days prior to entering or attempting entry into the US. These restrictions go into effect at 11:59 EDT on Thursday, May 28 and will remain in place until terminated by the President.
While the Section Two of the Proclamation lists certain exceptions (including US permanent residents and family members of US citizens and permanent residents, as well as certain non-immigrants), international students and scholars on non-immigrant visas should take these restrictions into consideration when making plans for the coming months. Given the uncertainty regarding the duration of this travel suspension, the International Center believes that the ability of persons to re-enter the US from Brazil (even if only transiting through Brazil) may be restricted for the foreseeable future. At present, Brazil is the only country in South America subject to a COVID-19 travel suspension. Persons arriving from other countries not subject to a travel suspension (refer to our COVID-19 travel suspension information page, which is routinely updated, for more guidance) are still eligible to enter the US.
Because this travel suspension comes as we are headed into a vacation period, we understand that this may be altering your summer plans. If so, please contact the International Center if you need assistance or advice regarding your immigration situation or summer needs. We may be reached at internationalcenter@tufts.edu or (617) 627-3458
Sincerely,
Andrew K. Shiotani
