This afternoon, Tufts Technology Services (TTS) issued an email warning members of the University about the rise of IRS impersonation scams. In these scams, individuals are receiving emails seemingly from the Internal Revenue Service with promises of "Tax Refund Payments," prompting them to enter their personal information. The email is not a genuine IRS email and persons should not click on any links in the email.
For the actual warning from TTS, go to our Fraud Alerts page.
Please be aware that the tax filing season and taxes in general is an area where international students and scholars are often targeted by scammers, often with fake promises of refunds or other benefits. Be cautious about any email you receive that presents itself from a US government agency - do not click on any links or respond to the message. In almost all cases, government agencies do not conduct business over email. If you would like assistance or have any concerns about a message you might have received, contact the International Center at 617-627-3458 or internationalcenter@tufts.edu.
