Update to US State Department J-1 Skills List
Monday, December, 9th, 2024 News and Updates
Information for J-1 Exchange Visitors at Tufts:
The U.S. Department recently announced an update to the Exchange Visitor List, effective December 9th, 2024. This is a significant update that removes the two-year home-residency requirement (212e) for J-1 visa holders from 34 countries, including China and India.
What is the Exchange Visitor Skills List?
The EV Skills List indicates countries and fields of specialized knowledge and skills that are considered fundamental to these countries. These determinations are intended to preserve expertise in the designated countries. J-1 visa holders from these countries were historically required to return home for two years after completing their J-1 programs.
How Does This Benefit J-1 Visa Holders?
- The two-year home residency requirement (212e) will no longer apply to those from China, India, South Korea, and other removed countries, unless triggered by other factors such as government funding or participation in medical training programs.
- Impacted individuals may now be able to pursue other U.S. immigration options after their J-1 programs, such as H-1Bs or green cards, without needing to first apply for a waiver. This removes a significant barrier for J-1 visa holders and prospective employers who wish to sponsor them.
