Dear International Students and Scholars from China:
On Friday, May 29th, President Trump issued Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry as Nonimmigrants of Certain Students and Researchers from the People's Republic of China. This proclamation goes into effect today (June 1, 2020), and applies to certain citizens of China who may be seeking F-1 or J-1 visa status.
This communication is to let you know that the International Center is aware of this proclamation. Along with other colleges and universities, we are awaiting further details and information from the US Department of State and the US Department of Homeland Security about how this proclamation will be implemented. Based on the text of the proclamation itself, this decision will apply to only specific sub-groups of persons from China seeking to come to the US as F-1 students or J-1 exchange visitors. For the most part, this proclamation will not apply to undergraduate students or to students and researchers who are not supported or employed by or otherwise affiliated with certain entities engaged in highly sensitive research with potential military application. At this juncture, the proclamation does not affect the F or J visas of persons already here in the US, although this may be subject to review within the next sixty days.
Once we have more information and details about the Proclamation, the International Center will send an updated announcement and will hold an open forum meeting so that you can present your questions. In the meantime:
- Always consult with the International Center prior to making any decisions regarding travel, employment, or other matters relating to your immigration status
- Please check your Tufts email frequently for ongoing updates and announcements
