Question of the Week

Each week the International Center will pose a frequently asked question from students and scholars. These questions are general in nature and have been edited for conciseness and clarity. If you have a question you'd like us to include in this column, send us an email at internationalcenter@tufts.edu.

Question: I left the US back in March and plan to come back in September to continue with my program. However, I am concerned because of the travel restrictions that are still in place. Do you know when they will be removed? If I cannot come back to the US, what should I do?

Answer: Unfortunately there is still considerable uncertainty regarding the travel restrictions that were put into place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please know that the International Center is monitoring developments everyday and once updated information is available, we will post it on our web site and send it out to all affected members of the international student community.

  • Currently there are COVID-19 related travel suspensions in place for persons entering from China, Canada, Mexico, Western Europe (including the United Kingdom and Ireland), Iran, and Brazil
  • These travel suspensions apply to anyone (with certain exceptions) who was physically present in these areas within 14 days of seeking entry into the US; however, persons are still eligible to enter the US if arriving from countries not included on this list
  • We expect countries to be added or removed from this list as developments unfold over the summer.

Note also that you will need a valid visa to enter the US to study or work, and US consulates are still closed except for emergency appointments. We anticipate that normal operations will resume in July, but this is still not yet confirmed.

If you have specific travel situations we strongly recommend that you schedule a brief Zoom appointment with your international student advisor to talk through the different scenarios that might apply to you.
