Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy 2022-2023 Estimate of Expenses

Updated: October 17, 2022

This page is for students admitted to graduate and professional programs in the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy requesting F-1 student visa sponsorship from Tufts University.

Fletcher School incoming international students apply for an F-1 visa unless the home government or scholarship organization requires him/her to apply for a J-1 student visa.

Instructions

To qualify for a Form I-20 (for the F-1 student visa) or Form DS-2019 (for the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa) from Tufts University, you are required to provide financial documents that show you have adequate financial resources to meet the required tuition, fees, and living expenses for at least your first academic year of study (or the entire program duration of the GMAP).  Your documents must show that your resources meet or exceed the total amount listed in the Estimate of Expenses (EOE) table listed below for your degree program.

  1. A list of acceptable financial documents can be found at https://icenter.tufts.edu/student-visa-documentPlease read the instructions carefully, as submitting unacceptable documents may delay processing your I-20 or DS-2019 visa document.  All financial documents need to be written in English, or an English translation must be submitted with the original document.
  2. The EOE reflects minimum estimates for full-time study for an academic year (nine months or twelve months - GMAP, the US immersion costs - GBA).  While you are only required to show funding documents that cover the figures on the EOE (an academic year worth), please keep in mind the following:
    • The EOE is an estimate, but your actual costs may be higher depending on your individual needs.
    • The EOE does NOT include the visa application fees, I-901 (SEVIS) fee, cost of travel (including travel for initial arrival, winter and summer vacations, etc.), or summer expenses if you plan to remain in the US during the summer.
    • If you receive financial aid through Fletcher School, your financial aid will not cover vacation travel or summer living expenses.
  3. Your funding documents must reflect the financial resources available upon your arrival at Fletcher School.  Please do not include a pending educational loan or scholarship as your fund until fully approved and available for you.
  4. While you must provide funding documents for your first year of study (or the entire program duration - GMAP, the entire immersion duration - GBA), you should develop a realistic financial plan for the entire program.  Keep in mind the following and plan carefully, as any interruption of studies due to loss of funding may impact your ability to remain in the US:
    • International students must study full-time every fall and spring semester and have only limited options for getting financial resources through work.
    • On-campus work is restricted to part-time (not to exceed 20 hours per week), and the number of available on-campus jobs is limited.  Off-campus work is not permitted for the first year of full-time study in the US.
    • Do not indicate any "on-campus employment income" in your I-20 or DS-2019 request:  no incoming Fletcher students receive an additional scholarship based on on-campus employment, like other Tufts graduate students receive (i.e., Teaching/Research Assistant work-required scholarships at the Graduate School of Arts, Science and Engineering.)
